CEI Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meet in Budva

The annual meeting of the CEI Ministers of Foreign Affairs, held back to back with the Committee of National Coordinators meeting, was hosted by Montenegro in Budva (Bečići) on 15 June 2010 and chaired by H.E. Mr. Milan Roćen, Montenegrin Minister of Foreign Affairs. In his introductory remarks, he reaffirmed the CEI’s central role in the cooperation of its Member States with the EU.

The meeting focused on the latest developments in the region and on measures to strengthen the CEI. Special emphasis was given to the political, structural and financial aspects of the organisation as well as to its visibility. The fundamental mission of the CEI in bringing the non-EU countries closer to the EU was confirmed.   The Ministers welcomed the proposals of the International Group of Experts, chaired by Hon. Roberto Antonione, and adopted them as “Budva Recommendations”. The Ministers agreed that a strengthened relationship with the EU was of the utmost importance. They considered that the CEI had solid basis for exploring avenues for cooperation in areas of mutual interest with the EC. They also welcomed the successful partnership with the EBRD, which should be further strengthened.   The Ministers encouraged the CEI to look into new ways of financing, especially from the private sector.
